The attenuator must level out the response to equalize the output. At 2kHz it is +2 dB, +3 dB at 3kHz, +5dB at 5kHz, +6 dB at 8 kHz, and +8 dB at 15 kHz. Notice in the graph below, the output slopes up above 1000 Hz. Not taming the rising output will cause the top end to be very hot and peaky.Īn adjustable attenuation network has been developed to correct for the rising output. They all have a steadily rising output with frequency and this speaker is no exception. All single driver speakers suffer from a response anomaly in the upper registers. The amp can cleanly drive this speaker to very loud levels. It has an efficiency of 95 dB for one watt which turned out to be plenty for the 300B amp. The driver used is the Tang Band W8-1772. In this regard, the speaker was entirely successful. If it matched well to that amp, it should also work well with all higher powered Transcendent Sound amps. The primary criteria was to to develop a low cost speaker that would be a good match for the new 300B, 1.5 watt OTL amp featured in. Bass reflex cabinets are much simpler to construct and consequently were selected for this project. There is nothing wrong with horn loading but the cabinets are difficult for the hobbyist to build. However, most single driver models require horn loading. Single driver speakers are very popular and have many advantages, primarily simplicity, ease of drive, and excellent performance.
